Submitting a hackathon project

Draft, submit, edit and withdraw your team's or your own project.

Some events, usually hackathons, ask each team or solo participant to submit a project for judging. You write a short description, add links to your code, demo and video, and submit it before the deadline. You can keep editing until submissions close.

Who can submitLink to this section

Each entrant has one project:

  • on a team event, the team shares one project
  • if you take part on your own, the project is yours

Only confirmed registrations can submit. If you're still waitlisted or waiting for approval, the project section says it opens once your place is confirmed.

Where you edit the project depends on how you registered.

You areOpen the project from
A team leaderYour team page (the link in your team email).
A team member, signed inAccount settings → Registrations → Team project, or Open team project on your ticket.
On your own, signed inAccount settings → Registrations → Project, or Open your project on your ticket.
On your own, registered as a guestYour ticket → Email me my submission link.

A team member who isn't signed in sees "Your team leader submits the project from the team page." Any member can still edit the project by signing in to the account they registered with.

If you registered on your own without an account, choose Email me my submission link on your ticket. We send a private link to the email address you registered with. Anyone with that link can edit your project, so keep it to yourself. Asking again sends a new link and the old one stops working; you can ask once a minute.

Write and submit your projectLink to this section

  1. Enter a Project title (up to 120 characters).
  2. Add a Summary of what you built and how it works: plain text, up to 4,000 characters. It's optional, but judges rely on it.
  3. Optionally add links to your Code repository, Demo and Video. Each must be a full https:// link.
  4. Choose Save draft to keep working on it later, or Submit project when it's ready.

When you submit, you see "Project submitted". If the organisers turned on submission receipts, you also get a confirmation email. The project's status chip changes from Draft to Submitted.

Judges see your title, summary, links and your team name (or, on your own, your first name and last initial). They never see your email address.

Edit or withdrawLink to this section

While submissions are open you can keep improving a submitted project: make your changes and choose Save changes. It stays submitted.

To take it out of judging, choose Withdraw… and confirm with Withdraw. A withdrawn project isn't judged. You can bring it back with Submit again while submissions are still open.

The submission windowLink to this section

The chip at the top of the project page shows where things stand:

ChipWhat it means
"Submissions open …"Submissions haven't started yet. You can't start the project until then.
"Submissions close …"Submissions are open. Save and submit before the time shown.
"Submissions are closed."You can't submit or change the project any more. A submitted project stays in judging.
"The organisers haven't set the submission dates yet."Check back later.

Dates are shown in the event's time zone. The deadline is checked when you save, so submit in good time rather than at the last second.

After submissions closeLink to this section

Depending on the organisers' choices, the event may then publish a project gallery of submitted projects and, after judging, a results page with the awards and winning projects. Scores and judges' comments are never shown publicly. If the organisers chose to email entrants, everyone with a confirmed place gets an email when results are published.

Good to knowLink to this section

  • If the organisers disqualify a project, its page says "This project isn't part of judging." Contact the organisers if you have questions.
  • If you registered on your own with a submitted project and then join a team, withdraw your solo project first. A solo draft is discarded when you join a team.
  • Disbanding a team, or cancelling a solo registration, removes its project too.
  • Your projects are included when you download your data.
