Registering as a team

Create or join a team, register solo, find teammates, and manage your team page.

Hackathons, game jams and competitions often register people in teams. On a team event, one person creates the team and becomes its leader, and teammates join with the team's link. Each team takes one place, however many members it has.

How team registration worksLink to this section

When you register for a team event, the form asks How are you taking part?

  • Create a team: you lead the team and get a link to invite teammates.
  • Join with a link: your leader shares a link that registers you straight into their team.
  • Register solo: take part on your own. This appears only when the organisers allow it.

The form also shows the team size limits, for example the most members a team can have. If the organisers set a minimum size, a team below it is marked Incomplete and can't be approved until it's big enough.

Everyone in a team shares the team's status. If the event needs approval, or is full, the whole team waits together, and when the organisers approve the team or give it a place, every member is confirmed at once and gets their own ticket by email.

Create a teamLink to this section

  1. On the event page, choose Register your team (or Register a team or yourself).
  2. Choose Create a team and enter a Team name (up to 60 characters). It must be different from the other teams' names at this event.
  3. Fill in your details and any questions, then choose Register.
  4. Check your email. Alongside your ticket, you get a link to your private team page, where you'll find the join link to share.

If you're signed in, you can also reach the team page from Account settings → Registrations → Manage team, or Manage team on your ticket.

Join a teamLink to this section

Ask your team leader for the team's join link. Opening it shows You're joining with the team's name and size, and the usual registration form. Fill it in and choose Register.

Already registered on your own? Don't register again. Either:

  • open the join link while signed in to the account you registered with, or in the browser you registered in, and choose Join followed by the team's name, or
  • open your ticket, find Join a team, paste the link into Team link and choose Join this team.

You keep your ticket. Your place then follows the team's: if the team is still waiting for approval or a place, you wait with it.

You can only be in one team per event. A full team, or one the organisers declined, can't be joined.

Find a teamLink to this section

On some events, the organisers let people who register solo look for a team.

  1. When registering, choose Register solo and tick List me as looking for a team.
  2. Add a Headline about what you bring (up to 120 characters) and up to 8 Skills.
  3. After registering, open your ticket. The Looking for a team card shows Teams looking for members, where you can choose Ask to join, and Others looking for a team.

Team leaders can also invite you; invitations appear on your ticket with Join team and Decline. Other people only ever see your first name, last initial, headline and skills, never your email. Use Edit details to change your profile or Show me on the list to hide yourself. Nobody is emailed about requests and invitations, so check your ticket now and then.

Your team page is for leaders. Anyone with its link can manage the team, so keep it private.

Remove a memberTheir ⋯ menu → Remove from team…. Their registration is cancelled.
Hand over leadershipTheir ⋯ menu → Make leader…. They get a new team page link by email, and your link stops working. You stay in the team.

Secure the pageReset management link… under This page's link. The new link is emailed to you.
Disband the teamDisband team…. Everyone's registration is cancelled and the team is deleted. This can't be undone.

Adding members isn't possible on invite-only events (share the join link instead; each person signs in with their invited account), once registration has closed, or when the team is full.

If the organisers decline your team, you can still view it, remove members or disband it, but you can't add people or change it.

Leave a teamLink to this section

  1. Open your ticket and choose Leave team in your team's card.
  2. Confirm with Leave team.

Leaving cancels your registration for the event. You can then register again on your own or join another team. If the leader leaves, leadership passes to the member who joined first; if they were the only member, the team is deleted. You can't leave after you've been checked in.
